The ‘Palatine Plod’ is a 380 mile long-distance walk that very roughly follows the boundary of Lancashire from Liverpool to Walney Island. It links the most distant towns Mossley and Barrow-in-Furness, and visits Lancashire’s highest point – Coniston Old Man. It also makes occasional forays to the coast, Knott End-on-Sea being the halfway point. The route has been determined by the availability of public transport and influenced by winter conditions underfoot.
This is the ‘real Lanashire’ before the boundary was butchered in 1974. The walk is called ‘Palatine’ because the county’s historic title was the Palatine County of Lancashire – and the rhyme is okay.
The walk can be done in 26 self-led stages. My preferred day for doing them is Thursday, therefore the timetables shown are midweek ones.
